Its that time of year again when archaeology professionals, academics, and volunteers come together to explore and celebrate the latest digs and research from across Greater Manchester, courtesy of GMAAS, the Greater Manchester Archaeology Federation, and the University of Salford. During the three years of the COVID pandemic, community archaeology and voluntary archaeology struggled, whilst developer-funded archaeology continued behind the fences and hoardings of construction sites. However, 2023 has been the first full year since the lock downs and restrictions of the pandemic were lifted.
Greater Manchester Archaeology Day (GMAD) is once more show casing all the latest findings of the last 12 months, in addition to an array of local society displays, stalls, and archaeology books. The day includes a variety of fieldwork on topics from the Mesolithic to the 20th century. Locations covered include prehistoric sites in Tameside and Wigan, the Roman Castleshaw fort annex, the Peel, Williams & Peel Foundry in Bolton, and the Adelphi Baths in Salford.
The venue will once more be the Peel Hall in the Peel Building at Salford University. The fee for the day is £10.
